Nobody thinks Columbia is a paradise. Hell, I was a student at SC and lived in Columbia for almost 5 years.. it's DEFINITELY not. Any former and current student will tell you that.
As far as crime, Columbia can be pretty crappy, especially during the summer... but the entire point of the debate is that there's more to do in Columbia than Clemson. Which is true. One is a CITY for christ sake.. with a metropolitan population of over 700,000.

Ok, what is it you do in Cola that you can't do in Clemson. Just answer it without counting up number of bars and restaurants, and talking about the zoo. I can play tennis in both cities. I can golf in both. I can go to a lake in both. I go to movies in both. Etc.
Clemson is right at base of mountains. Lot more cool places to go around Clemson than Cola. Who wants to go to the Congaree swamp or that sandhills state park.
