It's extremely disheartening & sad at how poorly managed UA basketball is. Even with that said, hiring the right coach can make a huge difference.
When you grow up watching Bama when Wimp was running the show, as did I,and pretty much the only team that would challenge us in the SEC was UK, you end up having a LOT of faith in the program. And it hurts more seeing the state it currently is in. shite, I though Hobbs was as bad as it would get, boy was I wrong.
I think that's whats so troubling. The younger generation see's what UA basketball is today, and doesn't realize the success we have enjoyed. We've become complacent with a half assed product.
We were insanely good in the 80's, winning 5 SEC tourneys in an 11 year stretch. Making the sweet sixteen 6 times during that stretch, and making the big dance 10 times during wimps 12 years as coach.(1 nit)
The right coach can make it happen. Problem is, any up and comer coach that we may land with no ties to the university or state, will more than likely use us as a stepping stone for a better offer somewhere else that is more committed to basketball.
CWS was the perfect hire having grown up in Bama, & was a fan his whole life. The dungeon that is coleman, was the "plaid palace" and we packed the bitch out back then.
With players like Horry, McKey, Sprewell, Lollipop Robinson, Waits, Benoit, Washington etc.. it was easy to see why. He was one HELL of a recruiter and coach. I think he put around 15 or so in the league? You just got used to seeing an exciting product on the floor and come to expect it with him at the helm.
So even though our situation looks dim, a great coach can turn it around.
Hell, Saban could probably pull top 10 classes or better at Vandy, but the difference is our commitment to football is what keeps him. Also, I think Saban demanding the keys was crucial for our success, as I think our Admin would have shite the bed someway by now.
While paying Grant around 2 million a year shows some commitment, a paycheck alone will never keep a great coach without some sort of ties to the state and/or university.
Coleman needs to go though, the damn thing is like 50 years old.

Speaking of Whimp, remember when he would get POd at the ref and take off that ugly plaid jacket and throw it on the bench of floor?

I'd like to see Coleman go to the women's teams... New arena for the men's.

That is a win-win for everyone. The women could get away from the infamous stand in the schoolhouse door story (Foster) that is retold every fricking home game that is on tv AND the men get a new arena and potentially some excitement that has been missing in Coleman since it was the plaid palace.

All we need is a quality coach. (don't hold your breath though)
