No, who said that? At most they help us lock the rates in DFW like LSU does in Houston.
Nashville has maybe a million in the metro. Memphis metro is a little bigger but not all in your state. The Washington DC Metro alone is six million. Not all in Virginia but the scale is different. Texas has five metro areas over a million, two over six million.
Your shitty little Tennessee cities were maybe big when Atlanta was the standard, but the SEC grew when you couldn't. They added two teams and got a 50% population footprint boost. That is what matters in 2015, and if you think otherwise you are wrong.
