I am wondering about what happened in the past that makes so many confident that yall have potential to upgrade

Before Chavis we were equally as badass with Bo Pelini. Upgrade is too strong of a word. This is the internet, people are fricking stupid.

We have talent and a TOP offense so just a competent DC can be very good for us. We are foolish to think we can improve a lot because there isn't much room for improvement, but we can certainly remain just as good as a whole on defense. We might not be as good against the spread because Chavis excelled there, but we can improve our prevent/long yardage D and aggressiveness on the DL/LB.

LSU fans that are glad he left are dumb and reactionary (bird in hand), but that doesn't mean we can't get someone to put an equally as good product on the field. The people thinking we are going to take a major step back on defense are equally as dumb and reactionary.

ETA:

Lets resume this when we actually hire someone.

I get that.

I am not criticising the opinion that yall might upgrade, or am I doubting it will happen. With all those coaching hire stuff NO ONE KNOWS until the games are played. Plenty of top coaches have flopped in new positions (hello Fran) and plenty of no-names have overperformed. So we won't even know the story when LSU actually hires someone. We won't know till next season.

What I am interested in is the rationalization itself. Normally rationalizations go after low hanging fruit- which in this case would be expecting better recruiting or expecting Les to be forced to put out a better offense. But in this case LSU fans are expected BETTER DEFENSIVE COACHING, which should be the HARDEST rationalization to swallow if your program really lost a guy who is a top 10 DC.

Maybe it can be as good, but to really expect BETTER means that many LSU fans DO believe that there is "much room for improvement." To me that shows that maybe yall know something we don't, and so I am trying to get to the bottom of it.
