Chavis shut down HUNH offenses. That is the trend in Texas high schools and around the nation. This is exactly the kind of defense we need going forward. This is Sumlin watching trends and making moves to stay ahead. See how I can spin it the other way (which is more likely the truth than you meltdown). How was that?
That is a lot better.
The only problem is that Malzahn has abused Chavis both times they have played. Actually, go back to 2010 with Cam and he abused him then too. Chavis thought he knew how to stop Cam and he got embarrassed. Our punter kept the score relatively close.
Chavis doesn't shut down HUNH offenses. He shuts down Sumlin and A&M. Mobile QBs not named Johnny Manziel give Chavis fits.
His benefit is that he is solid and is a good coach. He will bring discipline and a solid plan and, if he has elite talent, he will field a top 15 defense. But, without that talent and experience, LSU's defense was pretty bad for 1.5 years except for destroying A&M every time we played.
Chavis is good, but is he the best? Is he worth $1.7mill? No. I don't think so. So, the next question is why did Sumlin want him so bad? I have put forward my theory.
