The most use I found was in thermo. A couple of basic tools could solve for every mass flow and enthalpy as long as I could fill in a few gaps.
Learn a little VBA while you're at it though. Writing macros can cut your time considerably after you put in the initial investment to get it coded up correctly.

I was hesitant at first with it because i was pretty good at punching all the stuff in on my graphing calc. Then i started using it because we had much longer annuities and such to solve. I also like being able to make a 30 year amortization chart in just a couple of minutes.
Excel also kicks arse for accounting.
