Florida had SEC titles and won 6 or so with Spurrier so I think these situations aren't comparable.

If I was SC I would have Spurrier go ahead and announce that he is retiring at the end of the 2015 season. Then take the whole year to work on getting the best damn replacement you can that can step in the day after the Clemson game next year.

At least that would be something you could pitch to recruits that are interested in South Carolina and they would know what was happening.

He isn't going to retire this year so this is better than him lingering for 2 or 3 years. Also it gives him a well deserved celebration swan song season.
