But at the same time, the best offense Alabama played was Arkansas, which was 29th best (ypg).
LSU also faced West Virgina (15th) and Oregon (4th).
I wonder how LSU's yards per play would have been if they had not faced high powered offenses like they did.
But what made LSU's D so great that year was they were big play machines.

Yea, I was about to say, Alabama and LSU both had great defenses that were really different. LSU pressured and forced mistakes and capitalized on them, and gave up some "big plays" (relative to Alabama's). Alabama's didn't make as many huge plays (which is typical of the system) but was a brick wall.
