i think the question is interesting, though. say a team wins first playoff game and loses in the title game. do they the have one loss and one win added to their overall bowl record? or is the national title game a separate entity altogether?

it's simply a second bowl game.
The NCG winner can claim they are rose (for example) bowl champions and national champions. The NCG loser can claim they are sugar bowl champions.
