Um, actually they definitely would be the division co-champion. We're not about to hang a banner, but it is exactly the same principle as only being the co-champion of the conference.

Which is for losers. Who would play in atlanta? That's your division champion.

except being co-champ of a conference holds about 50x more weight than co-champ of a division.

Division you play the other 6 teams plus 2 others, and in this case MSU would have lost head to head to the actual division champ. A conference co-champ, since there is no CG, has played every other team in the league.
