Lots of kids don't know the connection/stereotype. Hell, I didn't know about it (thankfully) until I was a college freshman. It just never came up and I always associated with the south in my mind.

However, this IS South Carolina and the coach ought to have known. Maybe he deserves forgiveness and maybe not (I can't judge his heart) but the school system did the right thing by acting immediately given all the watermelon racism going around lately as well as the location.

This has got to be "top five" dumbest shite ever typed on an internet message board. I am forever grateful for your contribution.

So what if it is South Carolina? I live here and have my entire life and based on the crap going on in the rest of the nation, racial strife hardly even exists here. Way too much PC crap going on these days. I just don't agree with judging a whole by a part. If other places/states are having issues, they need to deal with them there. But don't proceed to pass judgement on a coach that did nothing wrong bc of issues elsewhere.

WTF does South Carolina have to do with it? We're probably the least racist, most get-along, state in the country. Blacks and Whites here reached an agreement long ago.

Let's really get to the Roots (pardon the pun) of this issue. The predominantly black teams were getting their asses handed to them by the predominantly white teams ... and the black folks didn't like it.

quote:

But here's where the things get even worse. At the close of each game, the players smashed the watermelon on the ground while reportedly making the monkey-like sounds of "ooh ooh ooh ooh." Apparently, the players did this after four or fives games, each time evidently after the largely white Raptor squad beat one of their opponents, each one largely an African-American team. Parents of players on one of the opposing teams reportedly brought this to the attention of African-American School Board member Michael Miller last week.

Next thing you know, someone is going to claim fried chicken, and that cute little nappy-headed African American kid named Buckwheat on Spanky and the Gang, racist things as well ... sheesh.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with teaching about the historical importance of watermelon in schools ....

BTW, Bud Walpole has been reinstated ( Video), and the complainers and whiners told to pound sand by the rest of the community.
