Funny thing that people tend to forget about these new epidemics, SARS, H1N1, Ebola, etc. is that diseases we have known about for decades, sometimes longer kill more people every year than they ever have.

Malaria kills 627,000 people each year
The flu kills between 250,000 and 500,000 people per year and estimated 3,000 in the US alone per year.
