Sherrill retired and Croom's career was unaffected (went back to being an NFL RB's coach).

Jackie Sherrill was 60 years old when he coached his last game at State. That's retirement age.
Most coaches don't ride off into the sunset. Have you seen Mack Brown's last few years? People get old and have less drive.
