The Ole Miss fans that tailgate with us in BR every two years are really good people, albeit tragically color-coordinated.

Having lived in that most vanilla of vanilla states (with apologies to The Coast which is cool) for four years of my life (including two at boarding school) I think I understand the Ole Miss mentality more than most.

A certain percentage of their fan base are truly convinced that they represent some Southern ideal and fancy themselves to be southern Gentry. It's a weird lifetime attachment to the Fraternity/Sorority aesthetic, that normal people grow out of while still in college. They tend to be overwhelmingly materialistic and interested in projecting themselves in a certain way that reflects that overwhelming self-importance. They tend to condescend to those who don't "buy-in".

I see these people as a historical remnant of Northern loathing and disrespect and the regional abuse that they suffered for 100 years. They reacted through creating an exaggerated sense of Cultural defiance. Something was being "taken" from them, so they defended it. They didn't adjust well to cultural change, they fought it and adopted an exaggerated cartoon-version of who they were.

The Ole Miss "regular folks" tend to be really solid people. The whole Faulkner/Southern gothic/literate/racially-inclusive/working-man Ole Miss crowd are fine people. They probably see themselves more like most Southerners-as a little bit of the under-dog. I suppose the self-appointed Ole Miss uber-class annoys them much more than it annoys the rest of us.

These people make up 90% of the fan base
