To the extent you're right, it's a pretty new development. When I started in the early 2000s, Alabama was a mediocre campus in a dumpy town. It's certainly improved, as Bama has pumped money into that effort, but I'm not especially concerned with having an inferior campus to Alabama's over the long term.

Both Alabama and Auburn are solid state schools. Bama excels in business, law, and pre-med while Auburn excels in engineering, architecture and vet medicine. Choosing the best school to attend between the two really depends on one's choice of major/career path.
