People who want wild-card at large bids are just scared their team won't cut the muster and want a second chance.

You have a point, my position on the At Large is that if your conference is already represented, you can not be AT LARGE, NO SECOND CHANCES

Would this not insure the smaller conferences could get in, Cinderella or whatever ?

Agreed. Champions of Power5 get auto-bids, top three non-Power5 champions get in based on SOS. This gives the little guys a chance, as well as provides fodder for the big boys in the first round. A true tournament of champions.

Would the national champions be the Best Team?

That would be impossible to determine due to the fact that "Best" is a subjective term. The entire point of a play off is to have a system select a champion based on objective criteria, and not a best team based on subjective criteria. The Patriots may have been the best team of the 2007 NFL season - but it didn't matter, they don't award trophies for best team, only champions. And we all accept the NY Giants as NFL champions for the 2007 season - well, all of us except Patriots fans. [Because they're the losers]
