I want the best teams in the playoffs

How else do you decide the best teams if not by conference champions?

committee members are going to be instructed to disregard the polls so even if say Auburn and Alabama are #1 and #4 in the polls

I thought the whole reason behind a playoff was to get rid of the opinion poll approach to picking a champion.

Either a play off OR a poll, NOT both.

The BCS formula was better in that it included a computer algorithm component that was unbiased.

Respectfully disagree. There should be at least a marginally unbiased method for ranking the 4 best teams and I prefer the BCS formula to a biased selection committee. By instructing the selection committee members to disregard the polls leaves them conscience free to for instance select an 8th ranked AP conference champion to participate in the the playoffs.

Various possible ways. Or are you really going to sit there with a straight face and tell us that Rice and La-Lafayette were better than Oklahoma last year?
