I know this may be confusing idea, but IMO the 2001 season represents the most realistic worst case scenario for the SEC in the coming format--true worst case is having an undefeated team left out but that's not happening.

You had two highly ranked teams (UF, UT) but neither are conference champs and a weak champ. Who gets in?

Looking back to 2001, you have undefeated Miami, who is in retrospect arguably the greatest team in a generation, but they didn't begin at the top.

After Miami, you have a whole lot of confusion, including arguments for 2 and possibly 3 SEC teams--problem is that the higher ranked Tennessee and Florida were not conference champs, while 3 loss LSU was. In total there are 13 teams with an argument, as they either have 2 or fewer losses or major conference champ.

You also have 3 Big12 teams with a solid arguments as well as a 1-loss Oregon from the Pac 10.

So, who are your final 3 teams after Miami and what criteria do you use?

Likewise, in today's time where Miami=FSU and UF/UT=SEC West, LSU=SEC East scrub, and Big 12=Pac12, how would you see it going down?

2. Nebraska: 11-1, Big 12 North Runner Up. By the end of the season, 1 win over ranked team (10 Oklahoma) and bad loss to 3 Colorado .

Pros: double digit margins of victory of ranked Notre Dame (17 at time) and Oklahoma (2 at time).

Cons: 36-62 Loss to Colorado last week of season, failed to win division
Nebraska

3. Colorado: 10-2, Big 12 Champs. 2 wins over top 10 end of season, and 2 losses to No. 9 and No. 20.

Pros: Big 12 Champs with big wins last week of season vs No. 2 Nebraska (62-36) and Big 12 CG vs No. 3 Texas (39-37). Considered "toughest" schedule of contenders.

Cons: 2 Losses; first in week 1 to then unranked Fresno at home (22-24), but by end of season FSU was No. 20. Also lost badly to No. 9 Texas on road 7-41).
Colorado

4. Oregon: 10-1, Pac 10 Champs. Ducks wins looked less impressive by years end. Loss to No. 11 Stanford at home and win @ No. 13 Washington State.

Pros: Pac 10 champs with wins over 3 ranked teams, Wisconsin (No. 22 (31-28), @WSU (No. 13 42-49), @ UCLA (No. 17 21-20).

Cons: Loss to then unranked Stanford at home 42-49. Considered "weakest" schedule of serious contenders. Oregon

5. Florida: 10-2 SEC East Runner Up. Preseason No. 1 had wins over ranked LSU, USC, and FSU in blowouts. Lost to 7-5 Auburn and Tennessee at home in big game last week of season.

Pros: 5 wins, some blowouts vs ranked teams (#21 MSU 52-0, @#18 LSU 44-15, #15 #UGA 24-10, @#14 USC 54-17, #20 FSU 37-13.

Cons: Didn't win division, loses at unranked Auburn 20-23 and at home vs No.2 Tennessee 32-34.
Florida

6. Tennessee 10-2, SEC East Champs. Tough schedule with wins over ranked teams: Florida (5), LSU (12), USC (14), and Syracuse (18). Loss to #16 UGA and LSU in SEC CG.

Pros: SEC East champs by beating UF at Swamp last week of season. Wins over ranked LSU (14 26-18), USC (12 17-10), @ Florida (2 34-32) and OOC Syracuse 33-9. No. 3 toughest schedule, with CU only one close of contenders.

Cons: Didn't win conference CG in rematch in 20-31 loss to 21 LSU. Home loss to then unranked UGA 24-26. Tennessee

No. 7 Texas: 10-2, Big 12 South Champs. Crushing Big 12 CG loss as they sat at No. 3. Split with CU and loss to OU.

Pros: Big 12 South Champs and win over No. 14 Colorado. Many blowouts of bad teams

Cons: Weakest schedule of Contenders, loss in Big 12 CG played in Dallas. Loss to No. 3 Oklahoma 3-14.
Texas

Below are the final BCS standings and a matrix of how the final top 25 (December 9) performed against other ranked teams:

I would go:
1. Miami
2. Oregon
3. Colorado
4. Tennessee

One of my favorite years. Miami, Colorado and Oregon are no-brainers based on the eyeball test.
Colorado was considered the best team at that exact moment in time.
Nebraska is out because CU gave them the worst beating in their history.
Illinois would be my number four. They beat five top twenty teams and were on a great run at the end of the season.
I wouldn't feel great about it though.

VOLS and Florida were the only two teams in the country that year that could've given Miami a game imo.
