Was the Auburn Kick6 truly a "miracle" play?

I wouldn't classify it as a miracle. I would classify it as extremely rare. An AU friend and I actually had this conversation on Sunday. It led me to do a little research.

I did a Google search on “how many missed field goal returned for touchdowns”. The article below answers the question.

Only happened 4 times since 1966 - never on final play of a game in college football history

It has only happened 4 times in college football since 1966. The “Kick Six” is the only one that happened to end the game.

If you look at an average of 100 teams playing D1 each year and an average of 12 games per team you get 1,200 team games per year. Divide that by 2 since 2 teams play every game and you get 600 games (conservatively) each year. Multiple that by the 47 years of college football games since 1966 and you’ve got a total of 28,200 games.

A missed FG for TD happens once every 7,050 games, or approximately once every 12 years. However, it has only happened ONCE in D1 college football on the final play of the game in history.

What's really crazy is that after reading your post, the kick 6 is the only one between two ranked teams (which is to say, two teams that are competitive talent-wise).

Fine it's not a miracle. It is extremely lucky - yes - perfectly executed, however it's not like you could replicate that if you replayed the scenario 1000 times.
