Well, w/o getting into it too much at this hour, I'll say that Bevo has a looooooong history of throwing their weight around to get what they want. It even stretches back to the FIRST time they decided to cancel the series against us, in 1912.

See, from the beginning of the series in 1894 through 1908, we went 1-14-2 against UTx. Then in 1909, new coach Charley Moran (who, incidentally, had attended Tennessee) lead us to two wins over "Varsity" as the horns were known at the time. Then he beat them again the next year, for a three game streak. UTx finally won again in 1911, but it was considered an upset, and that didn't sit too kindly with them. They decided to stop playing A&M so long as Moran was the coach.

Initially, A&M declined to fire their winning coach, and UTx made good on their threat. The series was ended, and the game not played from 1912-1914. Unfortunately, A&M's athletic dept really depended on the $$ from the UTx game. Without it, we would have gone bankrupt. Furthermore, the creation of the SWC was being lead by UTx professor and AD Theo Bellmont, and there was one requirement for A&M to join: fire Charley Moran. So despite a 6-1-1 season in 1914, including a 63-9 win over LSU, Moran was asked to leave. He did so graciously, and the 875 member Corps of Cadets made him an honorary member of the Class of '13, gave him and his family a full dress parade as a farewell.

UTx-A&M resumed in 1915, and the Aggies joined the SWC. Class man that he was, he wrote all the players as they prepared for the game against UTx in '15, concluding with "If you still love me and think anything of me, then beat Texas." The Aggies complied, and in the first ever UTx/A&M game played in College Station, shutout UTx 13-0. They would later brand the UTx mascot with the score from that game, giving rise to the mascot's name "Bevo".

That's for starters.

Great story. It's amazing how the little the Whorns have changed, too.
