Ever see a late night infomercial? You'll hear things like "Buy now and get this twenty dollar value, absolutely free."
These companies don't make money by giving things away. If they say something is a 20 dollar value, but they're giving it to you for free, then the item is not worth 20 dollars. If it was, they wouldn't be giving it away. In this case the item is likely worth about 10 dollars, and the price of it is worked into the other thing you bought to get the "free" item.
Sumlin's agent used the same strategy on A&M. Pay him $5 million now, and you don't have to go through another lengthy coaching search. You get to keep the guy you already have, and avoid all the crap that goes along with hiring a new guy.
That total package is worth $5 million. Sumlin alone is not. This is evidenced by no other coach with his type of résumé being paid a similar salary.
