Most people that I know who are religious have better marriages than the nonreligious. And when I say nonreligious I don't just mean atheist. I am talking about people who say they're Christians, but are not actually religious.
I would agree with this. I'm not religious, but I think those that put their marriage up with the social charade of going to church, care about what people would think if they were questioning their marriage. It definitely keeps the women in line a bit more than this modern age lib shite.
Last wedding I went to with my dad when the preacher was talking he says to me on the way back in the car(with my mother there):
"Make sure they say that "obey your husband" part. Those stupid women's lib made them take it out and it's bullshite."
My mother: "Wait, was that in ours?"
My dad: "you're damn right it was, I made sure"
On a related note, my parents disagree in religious matters all the time and it doesn't affect their marriage one bit. THey reached financial security about a year after I got to college(so my spoiled arse little sister got shite I never dreamed of) and they never fight anymore. My dad was a staunch Catholic growing up and doesn't believe in evolution, and my mother is a wishy washy social Christian that doesn't believe in hell. They fundamentally don't agree on religion, but it's never gotten in the way. Now credit card bills? There was quite a shite storm or two over that growing up, and I think that couples get more tension over money than they ever will anything else.
But actually as I re-read this, I sort disagree. Those that are religious don't have better marriages, they simply have more of an expectation to make it work, so they try harder at it. That might not make them happy, and they might stay committed to something they shouldn't. I would definitely think they do have longer marriages, but not necessarily better.

My dad proposed to my mother after a week of dating. They've been married over 40 years, and it's a happy marriage.
That's great, I think 40,50,60 yrs ago that story was not typical but not rare.

Most couples that try harder at their relationship do have better marriages.
