The San Fransisco 49ers nearly passed on Aldon Smith's 5th year option, and the Denver Broncos almost passed on Von Miller's 5th year option...it isn't always about production. The Detroit Lions, apparently, aren't happy with Nick Fairley work ethic. Not to say it's shitty, it just isn't where they want it to be. He's been a tad bit overweight some of the time he's been in Detroit, as well. Plus, their defensive line is pretty stacked, IMO. Oh yeah, and the coaches that drafted Nick Fairley are all gone (safe assumption on my part).
As I'm sure you're aware, TT, excuses are like assholes so save yours. It probably boils down to $$$. What's his guaranteed salary in his 5th year? If I'm not mistaken, a player whose option isn't picked up, becomes a free agent and can negotiate/sign with any team, so either Fairley isn't good enough for them to pay the salary, or they're not worried (don't care) about the possibility of him going to another team.
In Ingram's case, his 5th year was over 5 mil in salary, and 5 mil will get you a really, really fine RB!
