This is where I am right now. Are we even sure that Snyder has the ability to coach these 4 and 5 starts to their potential? We all know as long as Sumlin is at College Station the offense will be sufficent. But losing JFF (as good as Allen/Hill may be) the defense is going to have to pick it up for us to be competitive with the big boys. I still say we average at least 40 a game. But can we improve enough on defense to win only scoring 40?

Someone tell me yes.

I hope we run the ball more this year. I said it last year and it just didn't happen. I realize we aren't going to control the clock but perhaps we will win the turnover battle that way

I think we will get better but I want to us to get much better. We could improve on last year and still be atrocious. I want us to be around the 2012 level or better every year on D

I wrote a long post on this here and nothing has really changed my opinion

Snyder being a bad DC is the worst meme going. There is a reason he's very highly regarded in coaching circles.

Everyone focuses on our raw statistics. But that will never be great because we will always face more plays. To understand what is going on, you really need to move on from such a poor measure that has almost no correlation to winning.

Instead, take a look at efficiency ratings. And the best efficiency rating going is F/+ imo. F/+ controls for tempo as well as things like quality of opposition.

Snyder's years as a DC with F/+
2004 (Ohio State) - predates F/+ rankings Raw #s, 20th in Points Against/Gm and that team was led by their defense (offense ranked 73rd in PS/G)
2010 (South Florida) - 21st
2011 (South Florida) - 14th
2012 (Texas A&M) - 20th
2013 (Texas A&M) - 87th

So which is the outlier? The one year he had 10 true freshmen in the 2-deep or the 4 years he fielded very good defenses?

I get that it's en vogue to hate on Snyder. But the job he did in '12 alone should buy him time with A&M faithful. We'll still be incredibly green this year so maybe 20th is too much to ask, but his history suggests that when he's not fielding a defense comprised almost entirely of spare parts and true freshmen, he's really really good
