Big news. This guy is supposed to be Barnes' ace recruiter, right?

Big time get. Apparently Hart laid half a million on the table in order to get him here.
Who are you, and what have you done with bottom of the barrel Dave, Dave?
Edit: Sounds like that information was wrong.

Updated salaries and incentives for assistants from Wes Rucker
quote:
Tennessee associate head coach Rob Lanierwill have a base salary of $375,000 per year, while assistant coaches Chris Ogden andDesmond Oliver will be paid $225,000 and $175,000 per year, a UT spokesperson confirmed to GoVols247.
All three assistants also have various incentives built into their employment agreements. In short, they'll receive an extra month's salary if the Vols advance to the NCAA Tournament, with bigger bonuses triggered for appearances in the Sweet Sixteen and the Final Four.
Tennessee's $775,000 is a significantly higher commitment to the salaries of basketball assistant coaches — which, as several UT officials told GoVols247, was Barnes' biggest and practically only sticking point during negotiations. Barnes accepted a deal at Tennessee for approximately $300,000 less per season than he'd been making at Texas.
The Vols' three full-time assistant basketball coaches under former coach Cuonzo Martin made a little less than $600,000 in combined annual base salaries, and they were paid a little more than $500,000 in combined annual bas salaries under former coach Donnie Tyndall.
Barnes confirmed the addition of Lanier — who wasn't an easy man to keep away from new Texas coach Shaka Smart — on Tuesday, as well as the addition of Oliver.
Tennessee's new head hoops coach confirmed to GoVols247 on Friday that he had brought Ogden — the captain of his 2003 Final Four team at Texas — with him from Austin.

He sucks so we're getting rid of him?

That's what it looks like. Hard to blame Barnes. I'd say he hasn't had a roster this weak in a few decades.

It sounds like there may be at least one more guy who looks around before the air clears.

Barnes said that they will play at Gonzaga and schedule is almost complete.
He added Gonzaga will likely come to Nashville next year.
He added he'd like to play a game in ATL.
Let's get it

Also added that the Vols may be on the road more than usual so they can begin to build more of a national schedule. Mentioned several times they are planning to do things different this year in order to get marquee games.

Some interesting talking points from Rob Lewis on Rob Lanier, Des Oliver, and the perception of UT basketball.
quote:
One of the more intriguing things from the day was listening to Rob Lanier talk about the perception of this job from the outside and what he's learned about the program and the fan base since being here for a month. He is amazed and very pleasantly surprised at the passion and support he has found here. As an assistant coach at Florida under Billy D. Lanier obviously knew about the facilities and the campus but he indicated he had been blown away by the support from the fans.
I asked him for some examples of that and he pointed out that since leaving Texas, which is a prominent program in his own right, his amount of Twitter followers has tripled.
He went to make a great point that at Texas and Florida fans pay attention to basketball when it's good, and he added that he felt that both Barnes and Donovan had 'put a dent' in the perception of hoops at those two schools. However, in his mind, what Tennessee has that neither of those places have is a built in passion for hoops from a percentage of the fanbase that is present no matter what. His point was, you can't manufacture that. Really perceptive guy that is a lot of fun to talk to.
A lot of people know that he and Des Oliver are really good friends working together for the first time professionally. They were each the best man at the other's wedding and have known each other for over 30 years, starting as children in Buffalo. Lanier had a great story that shed some light on their roots, explaining that his family didn't have a phone, so when he was being recruited college coaches would call Oliver's house to leave messages and set up meetings.

From Brent Hubbs. Barnes on wanting to kick start the series with Memphis again.
quote:
"I think it's extremely important. For our state, for the fans," said Hart. "I just feel strongly we've got to do all we can to get that (annual Memphis) game moving again, and I'm not talking one or two games. Get that series from a long-term perspective, see if we can't get it back.
"Tom's been great in our conversations. We just need to see where Josh is, and Rick's going to handle that end of things and then we'll see what happens."
Barnes elaborated on the Gonzaga series and also stressed a desire for an annual meeting with the intrastate rival Tigers.
"We're working out the deal with Gonzaga. This year we'll have to go there, and again, Mark Few who I have great respect for, we scrimmaged them every year that I was at Texas once we were able to start scrimmaging, and we've either met in Denver or Arizona, we've met somewhere and we've scrimmaged. We're going to play, and he has a tournament up there in Seattle, Battle in Seattle. Think it's around (December) 20th. They'll return it back to Nashville (in 2016)," Barnes said. "I would not be opposed to playing a game here in Atlanta. I would love to get the series going with Memphis every year. If there's a way we can play in Memphis, we need to play in areas where we have alumni.
"And also we want to make sure we're playing in areas we're going to recruit. Whether it be on the East Coast … once you get it going, TV becomes such a big part of our schedule because they're going to want to start to put matchups together. It's important we have the kind of success that people want to play and TV would want to put us in."

There is absolutely no reason, IMHO, for either Memphis or Tennessee not to play a home and home every single year. It's good for both programs.
I don't want to hear any of this well well that gives us an extra loss crap, if you are good then you are good and 2 games on the schedule aren't gonna rob your opportunity. This isn't football

From what I can tell, it's all on Pastner. I'd love to have the series back against tiger state.
Posted on 5/14/15 at 7:28 pm to Wishnitwas1998
There is a reason and that reason is that it makes no since for Memphis to play a home and home basketball series with UT. They don't want to let UT get a foothold in Memphis recruiting and traveling to Knoxville does not benefit Memphis recruiting. Scheduling football games might sway Memphis in exchange for a basketball series. Pastner realizes that playing UT really only benefits us in recruiting.

Random thoughts in a dead thread:
Barnes beat all of UT's rivals (UK, UF, & VU) in his first year on the job with a depleted roster. I think bright things are coming back to Knoxville. If we can start recruiting at a high level I will be very excited about basketball season again for the first time in a while. Here's to hoping

This is where I think Barnes will run into problems. No doubt he is a good x's and o's guy and he can motivate the hell out of a team. I just think he is going to have a rough time recruiting but I hope I am wrong.

I'm far from an expert on our basketball team anymore but aren't we in desperate need of signing some size? Ppl have said what little we had this year is graduating and if we don't we will be even worse next year
Posted on 3/15/16 at 11:55 am to Wishnitwas1998
We need size in the worst way. We've got Alexander and Kasongo with some height, but they are both still small for their position by P5 standards. Both are developmental players on top of that. I think Alexander will end up being a nice player for us once he puts on some much needed weight and works on his inside game more.
The incoming class isn't bad at all, but we could definitely use some more size. I really like what we are bringing in from the PG position in Bone and Parker. Williams looks to be a possible Admiral S. Type player
