You're right, Jackson was on the freshman team in '70, not to mention the walk-ons before him in the late 60's. But even though he was with the team, he didn't get on the field with the varsity till the following year, along with JUCO transfer John Mitchell. I think the USC game helped Bear in getting Jackson & Mitchell on the field sooner, and with much less outcry, than would've been otherwise...

All the talk about the 1970 USC game is nice, but the 1971 game in Los Angeles was one of the most pivotal games in our history. Huge reversal from the previous year, on the road, debut of the Wishbone, and the beginning of the run of 100+ wins in ten years, returned Alabama to the annual national championship discussion for the next 10 years.
