Being new to the SEC I don't really know the history, but I'm curious if there's a correlation between great years for Auburn and down years for Alabama?

Actually very much the reverse.

In the past 10 years, Auburn has beaten Bama 6 times and 3 of those times Bama's team won 10 games or more.

In the past 10 years, Bama has beaten Auburn 4 times and the best record of any Auburn team in those Bama victories was 8 wins.

The last time Bama beat an Auburn team that won 9 games or more was 1994.

In general, Auburn can beat Bama at any time.

Bama, however, can only beat average to bad Auburn teams.

And yet somehow Alabama has a healthy lead in the series overall.

According to your logic that means Auburn sucks most of the time.
