Patton was considered to be the best Allied general by the Germans. Ike used him to trick the Germans at least once by putting patton in one place (I think Dover) and tricking the Germans intot hinking the invasion of Normandy would come through Calais. The Germans couldn't imagine the allies wouldn't give command of the invasion to their 'best general'.

He was a perfect General for the army and time period (US; 1942-1945). The closest comparison for tactics I could see would be Grant (1864-1865).
