far less of an overstatement that there are a "million reasons to redshirt"... but you're right, no one is literally retarded, just in an outdated way of thinking, especially for running backs.

unless a guy is coming off a serious injury his senior year, or gets hurt during fall camp, there is no reason to redshirt... even the middle of the pack RBs (see tre mason).

eta: middle of the pack in regards to recruiting rankings... in case anyone "doesn't want to nitpick".
