my wife's friend has a son that finished his sophomore year playing qb. she's trying like hell to get him a scholly in a division 1 program in the south. ive warned her about using "street agents" and recruiters. just let his head coach do all the talking to schools. he's got an invite to the uga mini camp and he's got interest from miss st, and some other schools. do you like his film, mechanics and arm strength? bash away or praise. i'd like y'alls opinion. thanx

I know a little bit about him (Bowman) through a friend of mine in Olive Branch ... well, actually he's in Maywood but his address is Olive Branch. He told me about this kid all season.

I was in the business for years, which is why Larry called me in the first place to tell me about the kid, so here's what I see watching the film you posted plus some film Larry sent.

He's a good looking kid for his age. He's still got some work to do on his dropback and release, especially where that back foot is concerned, but I liked his pocket presence - and if the right person got a-hold of him right now and worked on his head and eyes and set-up, he could really improve his status his junior year. I'd get him into a couple of good camps over the summer.

The HUDL video is okay, but the coaches may or may not appreciate it much - it's what we refer to as a pitch and catch video. Meaning, all it shows are his positives in very advantageous situations (against inferior competition and/or wide open receivers.) I think I saw him roll to his opposite side once, or maybe twice, in that entire video. Otherwise it was all pitch and catch that failed to show much of anything.

He'll need scrambling video and for him to be looked-at by any D1 program these days he'll need video of him running the ball where when flushed or by design, QB draws, read options, etc.

Arm strength seemed so-so, but delivery was decent, far from perfect but decent. He's got to git rid of the happy feet and he's got to work on that back foot where, upon release, he sort of whips it off the ground and around like a pitcher on a pitcher's mound. That's a bad think for a QB for a lot of reasons and good camp will explain to him.

He tends to telegraph his target, he's got to learn to look-off his receivers a bit because even a good high school corner will eat his lunch if he telegraphs his intentions like he does on every down ... well, maybe once or twice I saw him look-off his primary or check down to his secondary, but once or twice was all.

His stats really are not that important right now but it would not hurt to put stats somewhere in the video. Also, it needs subtitles like the name of the team he is facing at the beginning of each segment, that way coaches can cross reference his competition which might aid in validating the level of competition he is facing.

He has some decent receivers to throw to - and they make him look very good at times.

He doesn't run a lot because he doesn't have to ... plus Larry told me he's not very fast, like 5.0 or something and that's a major drawback for a D1, especially SEC, level QB. He can work on his speed - it can be brought down if he works on it at his age. He needs to be 4.7 max.

The positives are plenty for this kid at his age. If I remember correctly he comes from a good family rooted in solid Christian values and work ethics. He's intelligent. He's a leader. Studies, makes good grades, is well liked by most everyone. Has the community behind him.

He's got a ton of potential. Too early to say for sure but if he keeps working he'll get an offer from somewhere even if its Memphis State or La La or somewhere - although, it could be much better if he works at it and continues to improve and progress. Keep us posted on his progress.

Advise your friends to get him into a couple of good camps this spring and summer. The more the better. There is no such thing as over-camping. But the key thing is to put what he learns in the camps to practical application each and every time he returns home.

I used to tell QB prospects to hang a tire from a rope on a tree and throw through that tire all spring and summer if nothing else. Swing the tire, take the snap, drop back and throw through the tire .... 1000s of times.

The Manning Camp is naturally considered the best these days. The Bowden Camp used to be very good but I've heard it's fallen-off in recent years.

If he's serious about SC then what I would do it bring him out here for one of the HBC's camps. They are the best deal going IMHO and they bring in kids from all over the country. Then he could also schedule another camp right afterwards, like the QBA (QB Academy), or QB Top Gun. And, of course, if he's not been to both instate school's camps then he needs to go.

BTW, I've heard good things about the Richt mini camps, but when they say mini they mean mini and they're really there to look at specific players. If he got an actual written invite then that's a good thing.

He's not that far off. His mom/dad has been sending him to QB camps right? His technique is pretty sound, his shoulders are square on the release, he keeps his feet planted and pushes off the back, he doesn't have a super long wind-up/release. I thought he did a good job of using checkdowns. He wasn't afraid to try and fit the ball into tight coverage.

I was wondering why he didn't have a screen shot of his stats/awards for that season or career? i.e. 4000 yards passing, 29 TD's, 6 INT's, 2013 All Conference, etc....

I didn't know about his arm strength, there weren't a lot of passes over 20 yards. He sometimes would swing his back foot for longer passes. He threw many of the balls so that his receivers could get it, and the majority were hitting his receivers in stride, but there were still some accuracy/timing issues with his guys having to reach behind them or sometimes slow down (it wasn't that bad though.)

Summary,
Music is irrelevant in QB film, they need to show his stats/awards though IMO.
Mechanics are pretty good for Jr year film. I felt like I was watching a QB who had been to camps and had been coached well, his technique is pretty good.
Arm Strength is the question, there just weren't a lot of deep passes to judge from. Also on some of the shorter passes there wasn't consistent velocity, so I was wondering if he was throwing velocities to different receivers to help them out, (i.e. #6 can catch bullets, but #4 cannot catch anything thrown with a lot of force.)

Pretty sure, as the OP stated and the film indicated, that he just finished his soph season.

The leg whip indicates he is throwing almost entirely off of his front foot. You don't want a QB throwing off of the back foot. The problem with the leg whip is that it will twist his release point up top which will cause short and long range accuracy/timing issues ... but like I said, a good QB camp will break him of that. He needs to remember that what happens at his base effects what happens at his top. In his case there is a torquing action that is occurring. But I didn't want to get all into that. His back toe, front toe, and index finger should all be pointing in the same direction, the direction of his intended target, upon release.

I thought his touch was actually a positive. I just thought his set-up was a little slow, delayed even, in order for him to deliver those touch passes which indicates they are not yet product of muscle memory but rather a product of thought. But again, he's only a sophomore in that film and typically the most improvement, in high school, is from a sophomore to junior season ... for QBs at least. For most skill positions actually.

Cool, since he's only a Soph, the arm strength isn't as big of a deal. I'm sure he can get in the gym now and before the season to lift and get stronger.

I think when his arm strength improves that will help get rid of the leg whip. For a soph the kid looks solid. Knows how to throw with touch when needed. Best of luck to him these next two seasons.
