I believe he had a bit of racism in him, and who wouldn't growing up where he did, in the manner he did, during that time?

That chip on his shoulder has served him well, but he had a lot of sorrow as well. The loss of his precious daughter, continued harassment by idiots (even shot his horses). He is a man, and stood up when others would cower!
