How old is that battery and do you keep it trickle charged? It may not hold much of a charge once you need it.

A volcano stove is kind of an inverted funnel. It can use wood shavings, etc., and it burns hot and fast - good for boiling water for a canteen or to make soup.

Biolite stove

The battery is specifically designed to be used with the solar panels. It's not exactly a battery in the traditional sense. It takes a charge from the panels and lets you plug stuff into it. However, it does store a charge for some time, so you can charge it during the day and draw from it at night.

As for why the earthquakes are a risk, I'm in California, but not one of the parts that burns.
