The whole Marlon Blackwell thing

Marlon Blackwell, whose architecture I don't necessarily hate with the same passion that I used to, has received "Building of the Year" honors, tied with a structure at Columbia U, and one in Santa Monica, for his addition to Vol Walker Hall.
He won awards from AIA for the design last year, before it was even completed.
I hate that they did this in the central campus. But I guess its not just generic modernism. Its award-winning modernism, which is pretty ok. I guess. Thoughts?

Are there any glass barriers on the top of the building? I don't see any rails.

dislike. a lot. that is absolutely going to look like shite in 10 years.

Love it. It's great.
And yes, there are glass barriers at the top. It's hard to see them in that photo, but they are there.
Here's a better view:

It doesn't do much for me judging off the photos.

I've heard people familiar with it claim it looks like the 007 video game inside. It definitely is a killer building on the interior, which is the case for a lot of modern architecture.
I actually think I'd like it if it were somewhere on the edge of campus. I hate the spot, and I hate the addition to a historic building.

I think it might look better, honestly, once the limestone has a patina. Most modern stuff looks like crap because people don't value it and maintain it. I don't think we'll have to worry about that if the architecture school is in the building.

Well it makes people talk about it and the architect behind it.
If it were just another building, it wouldn't be discussed here...

True, but that shouldn't be the primary motivation for a design.
If I walked into my boss' office and took a shite in his floor, people would talk about that for years.

Agreed. I saw it for the first time this past fall when I was strolling with my son on campus, and my first thought was "WTF is that?" It's not a terribly ugly building by itself, but it's an eyesore as an addition to an historic building like Vol Walker.
It'd be like if they added a neo-modern, glass-filled sleek addition to Old Main.

That's pretty much Skip Bayless's M.O.; doesn't mean he's good at what he does.

Adding a modern addition to Old Main would make zero sense, because it's home to departments like philosophy and anthropology.
edit: I understand that the average person will not think of Vol Walker and the addition as the home of the School of Architecture. They'll see a modern building stuck onto a historical building, and they won't get it. But architecture isn't necessarily for the average viewer's sake.

The one thing about modern architecture that is good on the campus is that we have some great views that are really only enjoyable if you have a big glass pane window or rooftop patio to enjoy.
This is my favorite part of the building, the south-facing "porch" up top.

No, actually, I very much get it, I just don't like it.
I get that yes, it houses the SOA and is essentially a representation of what the architecture department is capable of, but I don't necessarily want that in the same way that I wouldn't want some colorful art mural on the side of Ole Main or a bunch of advertisements or branding on the side of the COB.
Granted, I'm probably grasping at straws with my analogies, but you can both get it and not like it.

I hope we just tear down Old Main and give free reign to Marlon to express/pimp himself. Let's rename the school while we're at it.

Another part is that trying to make the addition blend in would arguably do more harm to the historical wing of Vol Walker than the actual addition does. Why? Because making the addition indistinguishable from the historical wing would fundamentally change the original Vol Walker. By designing an addition that constrasts starkly in aesthetic, the historical wing is preserved, and even highlighted.
I understand that people don't like the modern aesthetic of the new wing, but I think that distaste can be tempered by an appreciation of what the design accomplishes.
