Were John Banks and Darius Slay terrible in your opinion?

I'm not even editing, that turned out great

I never said Slay or Banks were bad but you have to admit the ones we have now gave up a shite ton of yards and big plays. You can never have too many db's especially corners.

Not really. Our pass D issues was rarely our corners. Really only the UAB game was on them. Calhoun is f'n good. Redmond is f'n good. Jiles is pretty good when healthy. Cleveland is good.
Same thing happened this year that happened in Banks and Slay's SR years. Only we got even worse at FS since then. There's a finite number of scholarships to go around -- and the trenches are a far better use for them than adding a 6th string worth of corners.
In SEC only stats:
T#3 in INTs
#7 in YPA
T#6 in TDs allowed
#6 in OppoQB rating
#3 in comp%D
#1 in passes defended
#1 in PBUs
We were an average overall pass D. Don't let raw stats when teams threw an extra 10-12 times per game against us fool you.

Disagree.
He's played 2 years now in a backup role and the only time anyone noticed he was on the field was the one bad missed tackle at UK.
He didn't get posterized any more often than any of our other corners this year in spite of being the guy stuck with the backup safeties in practically 100% of his snaps this year.

Our Corners are in the top 5 pairs in the league.
Our safeties suck arse.

We really, really, need some immediate help at safety.

We just need to pray that Bryant and Peters are ready to roll next year.

JT Gray moving back to safety is encouraging, excited to see how he fares in the bowl game.
Koman will be solid going forward, I think.
Evans looked good at times, he's hell on the blitz, just 5'10 is borderline IMO. Would love to see some taller guys back there. Same with Market, I can think of a few big plays that are saved if our FS was an inch taller.
As you said, we need 2 of the 3 in Peters/Bryant/McLaurin to be ready. I wish Myles would have gotten to see some time on defense. I feel like Mullen takes all our best athletes for offense, we are plenty deep enough in that slot receiver position and I feel like he has the mind to be a good player on either side.

The corners are fine. I am just not sure what the safeties are doing on some plays. When 1B hits the field, I can almost guarantee that our opponent is going to go deep down the middle. Every DB will get burned at times. The same guys in the middle seem to get burned over and over and over again.

Evans doesn't have it between the ears. Neither did Cox. Our next scheme has to be more fair to that FS spot. The last 2 schemes have asked it to be too multiple/read too much. Collins' scheme wasn't like that last year, but morphed into a more talented version of Chris Wilson's D this year. Think that's why people are questioning Mullen's input on that side.
When you've had a number of guys over a number of years that are out of position as much as that spot has been since early 2011, you've got to start calling the scheme itself to question. Unless you want to blame Tony Hughes, which I don't at this point.
We badly need 2 of those listed to step up...

Some of the plays, like Cooper in the Bama game, coverage was fine and he made a great catch. Those aren't the ones in question. The problem is, like you said, when guys are out of position. The other thing I don't like, is in certain sets, our strong side LB has to cover that post route, which pretty much guarantees a catch for a big game and if the Safety misses or isn't there, it's a TD. On the first big Engram play against OM, the only defense on the pass was McKinney diving and missing batting it down by about an inch. Nobody had picked up the route at all.
I don't understand it, the switch we get caught in is there in every zone coverage on the planet. It shouldn't be that hard to pick up the transition.

I badly want us to run the Gary Patterson 4-2-5...
It simplifies everything so much on the back end....
