Maybe in your simple mind.
Everybody associates themselves with sports, whether that sports team wins or loses is irrevelant. To just associate with it is enough.
Win or Lose, it's better to be associated, or follow, a sport than not follow at all.

Why the crappy comment? It's just his opinion.
"Everyone" associates himself with sports? What does that even mean? I'm as big of a fan of my team as is anyone; but I certainly don't correlate said athletic team's outcomes with my overall personality & life outlook.
