Having been around a few killers, not serial killers but just regular killers, I can tell you they all have something just a little off about them. Real killers, not heat of the moment guys, are really scary and most of them are very intelligent. They are definitely wired differently than most people.

Do you think they are innately wired this way or is the wiring a result of traumatic life experiences?

Well, yeah... anyone is capable of murder in the heat of the moment. Not everyone is capable of premeditated murder.

They are generally lacking empathy, according to Werner Herzog. He's done in-depth interviews with many of Texas' death row inmates. They do appear to be very intelligent and normal, at first glance. The more you listen to them, though, you feel like, "Hey, this guy (or gal) is missing something."
