Was just looking up some attendance info I found interesting. Guess which year the old All-American/Hall of Fame bowl in Birmingham shows as the high-water mark for attendance? That's right: 1982 for Vanderbilt vs. Air Force with an attendance figure of 75,000. Has to be something weird going on with it as that is considerably higher than any other season shown. Anyone know why?
ETA: Found a newspaper article from 1988 showing that they sold all the tickets, but actual attendance was 54,399. A Brief History of the All-American Bowl

Very interesting. That is still quite a bit higher than other games from that era. The actual BBVA Compass Bowl record is from last year at 59,135. What will the other fans say if we get near that?
"Oh, well, Birmingham is only 3 hours from Nashville." Let's shut 'em up by filling a bowl that no one else cares to attend while UGA leaves the Gator Bowl empty. Make them regret not taking us.
