How are the opening and regional games relevant to the tournament? It's only 8 teams that compete for the championship regardless, so what's the relevance of the other games?

It allows you to squeeze in more games on the schedule over the NCAA max w/o tourney to the max with tourney.

The other teams compete in a tournament in N. Carolina (IIRC).

If this team puts out any want and effort, Cal will be very beatable.
