I grew up in the boot heel and other areas of Southeast Missouri. I have immediate family in Red Banks, MS, Knoxville, TN, and Slidell, LA and I would say where I grew up is just as southern in culture as any of the three. This is probably pretty accurate, although I would say that those of us who grew up in Northern Missouri (I grew up in the NE Corner) are also rednecks, we're just Yankee rednecks. We do grow corn after all (serve it with a side of meth); I had no idea cotton, rice and tobacco grew in Missouri until I was in HS and I don't think I've ever seen grits on a menu north of Columbia.
