b/c there isn't a strong college sports culture in Texas, the transients will pick whoever is winning... that shouldn't surprise anyone.

the state is much more enthusiastic as a whole when it comes to high school football and professional football/basketball.

This isn't accurate. You could say that Texas has a diverse sports culture but sports dominate here and nothing dominates like football. Most people here follow HS, College, and NFL while emphasizing one or the other. Considering we are about to be the only state in the US with 2 100k college stadiums its pretty ridiculous to act as though college football isn't huge here though.

It is true that some fans shift allegiance though but that's kind of the point. It wasn't long ago that most of the folks here raved about how Texas was eternally the big school in Texas and that A&M would never compete for support.

I stated over and over how when I was in school in the '80's and '90s that wasn't the case and was ridiculed. Here we are 2 years in to the SEC move and A&M still hasn't even won an SEC Title and we have passed Texas (who has the same record as A&M). This is with Texas less than a decade removed from a NC and less than 5 years from a Big 12 Title and NC Appearance.

A&M is older and larger than Texas, now we are more popular as well. BTW, it does matter because of recruiting and that also affects other SEC schools. Perception matters.

I lived all over that state for five years... I saw more passion for the cowboys in east texas and dallas... and more passion for the spurs in central texas... than for that of A&M and UT. Maybe some of that had to do with Mike Sherman and a steady decline since UT's 2005 season... or where was living.
