I've never really spent time in that portion of the state except driving through on my way to Chicago. The entire western coastline is nice, though (the less said about the southeastern portion, the better.) I'm up about 30 minutes from Traverse City. For those people here not familiar with upstate Michigan, at approximately 15,000 (yes, that's the right number of zeroes), it is the largest city up here. Bumpkin central indeed.

I used to travel to Michigan on business quite often and could never get a decent meal. I remember one place that looked decent and they put ice cubes in my red wine. I would ask residents, "So what type of food is famous around here?" and they would look at me with a blank stare. One time I asked that and they took me to their favorite place which was a Texas themed steakhouse kind of like Texas Land & Cattle. I just did my best to smile.

Yeah, you're pretty much on your own as far as finding great food. If you traveled far enough north, to the resort areas, you'll find pasties, and even pasty-themed restaurants, and those are considered a "local" food even if they're pretty much just the same thing as the traditional English dish. They're pretty damned tasty, though, so I'm not going to argue with them.
