However, our society has become increasingly secular.
Did you know that there were a higher percentage of atheists/agnostics/deists in 1830s in America than there are now? Then there was a great revival in the mid-1800s. True story.

Yep. Church attendance is down, thus offerings are down, thus the fear mongering from preachers.
