By the way, did Archer have any head coaching experience? Wasn't he a coordinator?
What was the circumstances surrounding the opening?
For example, Jack Crowe was hired to replace Hatfield a couple weeks before National Signing Day, there really wasn't a search, just bad timing to find a new HC. Crowe was the OC and had previous HC experience.
This started a string of misses for Broyles, he followed this up by bringing in Ford for a consulting role following the Crowe firing, again no real search conducted, it was Ford's job at the end of the year.
After Ford, Broyles wanted to hire Tuberville from Ole Miss, instead he was out powered by a committee consisting of former players, big boosters, and the Chancellor to hire Nutt.
In basketball, he went with Stan Heath over Bill Self, then had the Altman fiasco that began with a an oral contract being broken by BCG and led to Pel's hiring.
Hatfield over Johnson was mainly because of Johnson's recruiting practices at OSU, same reason why Switzer wasn't considered to replace him (he hired Holtz from the Jets). Hatfield won two conference titles.
He did get the baseball hire right by taking VanHorn from Nebraska.

The athletic department was in total chaos.
Broadhead fighting with dale brown, arnsbarger wanted to become ad so he as broadhead weren't speaking, broadhead was doing some rather illegal shite taping audio wise that ppl were sniffing around about, LSU was cheap at the time, it was a fricking soap opera.
Arnsbarger left to become ad at Florida, recommended archer to replace, ppl thought stability was more important than many things. It didnt work but its not like anyone KNEW Shannie was who he turned out to be and florida hired spurrier in 1990 I think, which most ppl thought was he place he wanted to really be.
Mack brown had coached here in the early 80's and I think would have been great here but seeing what the hell was goin on with broadhead he didnt want to be involved and it wasn't like ppl were knocking the door down for the job
