Here's another angle to consider:

With Rick Perry not seeking another term as Governor in 2014 is John Sharp (Democrat) positioning himself as a legitimate candidate?

Background: John Sharp and Rick Perry were roommates in college and have been political rivals ever since. In 1998, they both ran against each other for Lieutenant Governor and Perry won.

I don't know enough about Texas politics to really make an informed comment, but if shite does go down and he makes a big moral outrage splash, it wouldn't exactly be unheard of for him to spin something like that into a campaign stump.

I mean he can run as a democrat I guess, I don't really know who the front runners would be for the Texas Democratic Party right now. If your definition of legitimate candidate includes having a legitimate chance to win then hell no. He is still a democrat in Texas and there is no way he would beat Greg Abbott

Perry and Sharp got back to being buddies a while ago, that is why Sharp has that job which was appointed by a BoR that is exclusively Perry appointees.

Sharp is also an old school conservative Democrat, the kind that really doesn't exist anymore that is a Republican on every issue but didn't change Party affiliation. Ironically Perry was a Dem as well up until 1990 when he first ran for Ag Commissioner.

Sharp won't run for public office again and he certainly won't run as a Democrat if he did. The last time Democrat was elected to ANY Statewide office in Texas was 1994 and that is in spite of the GOP running some pretty bad candidates.
