Only because there was no reasonable reason to not be.

However, with the advancements of mathematics, science, and biology; There are very clear reasons to choose to not believe. Notice all brilliant scientific minds now stray far away? Notice IVY league schools have the lowest percentage of religious students? There is a reason. Logic dictates religion is irrational.
