Pharoh Cooper who was recruited as a ATH in the 2013 class and expected to see time at CB, has tweeted that he will be moved to WR for this season. Cooper also played as a WR in HS and was quite impressive at the position in the prep all-star Shrine Bowl. He's a talent with the ball in his hands either as a return specialist or as a receiver, and the staff is going to give him opportunities to get on the field. This may be another Chris Culliver situation where Pharoh gets a look, but unless he moves quickly as a contributor may end back up at CB. We'll see...

Another move is that 2013 class RB Jamari Smith is being moved to DB. Smith was recruited heavily by other programs as a DB but was offered a chance to play RB by USC and chose us. Don't know if he'll still get looks at RB or if this is full-time now, but it looks like he's changed his mind in this regard. Smith will most likely develop into a safety on defense...

Both good moves IMO.

Kind of surprised to see them move Cooper to WR already. Thought for sure he was gonna be a DB.

Figured Smith would see the light once he arrived and saw what was in front of him at RB.

I was at the Shrine Bowl game ... Copper looked like a special talent in that game. I hope his light comes on soon. I was sort of expecting to see him redshirt this year and then breakout his RFr or RSo seasons.

I watched the NC AAA State Championship with Havelock and Concord. Cooper was lights out and clearly the best player on the field for either side. Then I watched the SC/NC Shrine Bowl later that year and Cooper was again without question the best player on the field again for either side.

He's like a Gilmore, you can put him in any position and he's going to excel. I'm surprised we aren't looking at him at DB though, but if that's what the coaches want, it's for the best.

We are so loaded at RB. I thought that Smith might move to DB. Funny how the FL 8A All Coast RB ends up being our DB.

Cooper is talented enough to beat some guys out for some playing time. The problem is learning the offense he will be limited because of that reason. Next season I would expect him beating some guys out for a starting spot.

I agree with this. It would be neat if (BIG IF) he just shows out as a freshman a la Jeffery.

It would be great for him to do that but you have to be special to come in as a true freshman and play great at the WR position in Spurrier's offense.

We have several young WR who are talented enough to think that they could step up and have substantial contributions. They just need to actually do it. Ellington, Byrd, and Jones in particular are experienced veterans now and should be leaders for the position. K.J. Brent is younger perhaps but he's entering his 3rd yr. and should know the playbook by now: this yr. is a now-or-never year for him, IMO.

Shamier, Shaq, Jody, and Kwinton were all highly regarded talents, and all have at least one year in the program now. I understand that Kwinton may still be a work in progress, but hopefully Shaq and Shamier find themselves this season and contribute. If Pharoh can add his name to the list, then the more the merrier...

Vic tweeted he will be gone after this year to the draft. I'm wondering what the odds are that Cooper slips back to the DB spot next year after Hampton leaves (assuming all goes as planned).

ETA: I hope they moved him due to lacking the need for depth at DB do to it being as solid as it is as opposed to needing help on WR.

We are going to have depth at CB next season, which was another reason sortof to question adding Lammons as a 4th DB prospect (and 3rd CB) for this class....

Even without Cooper at CB, McWilliams and Christian have shown some talent and will get another year of experience this season. They should be ready to go in 2014. We'll also have Ronnie Martin who the staff likes very much, Ali Groves and now Jamari Smith. Also walk-on Sidney Rhodes who has shown he can contribute in limited situations...

5 scholarship CBs plus 1 walk-on. For '14 add in Green and Harris Jr. - I personally think Harris will be a guarantee red-shirt in '14 due to his size and youth. But still that's 6 scholly CBs for '14 plus Rhodes....should be more than enough to cover the CB position...
