He left a starting defense. That's it. There was no depth at any position. He was simply able to put together 11 overlooked defensive players, in the two classes he signed and a third he started, that would make up the 2005 defense.

Obviously he had to deal with the rumor of NCAA sanction and ultimately the 2002 class signed five days after they were announced, but he knew that it was likely coming. Yet he never built depth along the line of scrimmage. That's the most critical positions to fill. That cost us during the Shula era.
