Not true at all. He left Shula a lot of future NFL stars on the defensive side of the ball. That '05 defense, one of the better Alabama defenses in the last 25 years, was a product of Fran's recruiting. He sucked recruiting offensive players but he snagged a few NFL stars to play defense for him.

He left a starting defense. That's it. There was no depth at any position. He was simply able to put together 11 overlooked defensive players, in the two classes he signed and a third he started, that would make up the 2005 defense.
