Just saying I feel like their time could be spent in much better ways than bringing this case against him when he will clearly only be able to pay a very small fraction of whatever the settlement ends up being.

While I somewhat agree, this is not a new case, it is restitution for the crime and part of the punishment. As well as status quo for a lot of crimes. Just because they are seeking the amount doesn't mean they think it is repayable. Just a means of further punishment, that is reasonable for the crime.

For example, what's the point of convicting someone to 500 years of prison?
