That half point is the hook, but it's likely to change between now and gameday quite a few times.

The other "possible" motivation that cannot be overlooked, I suppose, is the Quinshad Davis angle.

Davis was a highly regarded prospect out of Gaffney, I actually met him several times as he came to all but one home games his senior season and tailgaited beside us on the south end of the stadium.

We were after four WRs that year. Fuller, Smith, Roland and Davis. We told all four of them that we would take three in that class, the first three to commit.

Davis wanted to wait, while the other three, Fuller and Shaq Roland, both more highly rated, committed. But when Kwinton Smith committed (who I wanted more than Davis fwiw, so I was happy), that meant Davis was going to be left-out and he couldn't believe it. He kept thinking that if he came to the games and kept hanging around, he would still get the scholly. (Davis is, to his credit, a very nice kid and I do wish him well.)

When that did not happen (him getting a spare scholly offered) he was left scrambling in the end between UNC, Tennessee and Wake Forest because Clemson, Ole Miss and NC State were already full-up by then.

So, now, Davis has been saying he is looking forward to this game - and he is certainly very familiar with the surroundings. There may be, from what I have heard, some element of payback motivating him - and he is a good player - but our guys are gonna tee-of on him. He's the enemy now as far as they are concerned.

Not like Southern Miss was terrible when we played them. Won their conference 3 years in a row, went 12-2 the next year. Just pointing out we played Fedora in a season opener recently. Also UNC gave up 68 points to Georgia Tech last year, I think we'll be ok.

We played a common opponent last season in East Carolina. USC played the Pirates in early September, and UNC played them 2 weeks later. USC beat ECU 49-10 at home, with ECU scoring their lone TD midway through the 4th quarter against mostly backups in the game for USC. UNC beat ECU 27-6 at home, with ECU scoring their 6 pts in the 2nd qtr.

They lost two 1st rounders in the draft and their RB was the first off the board in the 2nd. They lost 3 Oline to the draft, I'm not sure about their depth but I know that leaves them with a lot to replace. Our Dline should wreak havoc.

Running backs won't be an issue... it will be their Oline that will struggle. I'd expect Renner to throw a shite load of screens and quick outs.

Both East Carolina and a Fedora style offense are very similar offenses in how they throw the ball: they are VERY quick off the snap and releasing the ball in a bang-bang fashion. We have typically not put a lot of effort in rushing their QBs because our rushers get lost in the process where the ball is already gone before they can get to the passer. Versus USM in 2010, we got a single sack, and the two games versus ECU I think we only got 1 sack total.

So I expect us to not put up huge numbers in sacks unless they are coverage sacks, but even then their QB is coached to throw the ball quickly to a spot, so if anything we'll get INTs if our DBs and LBs are placed and prepared well (we got 4 INT versus ECU last season).

UNC should move the chains pretty well between the 20s IMO, but if they don't catch us behind our secondary and get long scoring plays, they'll get shut down inside the red zone....
